Ultimately I also went with a high bass 4th. It's turned out to be perfect for me with the music and chord voicings I want to play.

To help all of this, I tried tuning the bass side up a whole step. Additionally I found I was not playing the lowest bass notes (anything below low E on a bass guitar).

I also found that my left and right hands occassionaly got in each others way because of this. When I started arranging songs, I found that I liked to play the melody side on lower frets for the tone. It just made more sense to me for whatever reasons. When I started out (12 string grand), I went with MR tuning because I liked the note positions on both sides relative to the fret markers. I'll share what I did and leave it to your judegment if it has any merit for you. * I know it's not a big problem to order both strings and experiment, but when making a change, it will probably not be a short term deal and I'm a bit afraid to waste precious learning time for relearning.Īt the same time my path is still in an infancy, so now if ever would be the time to make a change. This far I've made my own list of supposed pros and cons with the MR:ģ) Switch to playing uncrossed and get the same notes from the same positionĤ) Gaining some new tricks I do not yet know that are possible only with the MRġ) Need to relearn some songs and rewrite the transcriptions I've made this farĢ) Need to reorient my instincts where the notes areģ) Losing some tricks I do not yet know that are possible only with classic tuning? The couple things that make me not 100% satisfied with the classic tuning are (perhaps remedied through other means than switching tunings):ġ) I like the sharper sound of strings (both melody and bass) played in the lower positions and when arranging a cover song, occasionally the lower position notes on the melody side are on the same frets as the bass.Ģ) I have still hard time remembering the notes on the melody side, but bass is starting to be more familiar. I'd appreciate any advice from any of you and especially from those who have made a choice between classic and MR.Īre there anything that I will be losing with MR besides the high D note and the gains? I've already decided that I want to use medium gauge instead of light, but the tuning still has me thinking.
